Photovoltaics
- What is it?
The
word The word "Photovoltaics
(PV)" consists of two parts: "photo" meaning light
and "voltaic" meaning electricity. "Photovoltaics" means
the generation of electricity from light. The
Process of Generating Energy from Light
Semi-conductor materials can be adapted
to release electrons - the negatively charged particles which
form the basis of electricity. All
PV cells have two layers of semi-conductors - one positively
charged and one negatively charged.
When light shines
on the semi-conductor, the electric field across the junction
between these two layers causes electricity to flow. This generates
DC current which can be converted into AC using an inverter.

generating DC current which can be converted to AC current using an
inverter - a
PV-system does not need bright sunlight - it still can generate
electricity on cloudy days |
